Retort Checks are a card indicator with an ink stripe that changes color. This is used to help demonstrate effective batch processing and separation as part of retort sterilization in food processing operations.

The Retort Check is used in food canneries all over the world and is an excellent way to demonstrate compliance with federal and governmental regulations that require a permanent record of each canning process through the use a color change indicator.

The retort tags provide an irreversible color change, similar to retort or autoclave tape systems, but will not change color unless exposed to the correct combination of time, temperature and steam quality. The Retort Check indicator tags also provide space for details of each batch, such as the date and location to be added to each card indicator, allowing the card to be retained as a permanent record carrying information specific to each process. With stripes that are far bigger than those on retort tape, the indicator tags also provide a much more visible color change that allows operators to quickly determine the status of each retort basket or tray. The ink changes color and acts as an identifier that helps operators to distinguish between processed and unprocessed batches.

Operators typically place one indicator on each basket or each individual tray before processing. Once the basket has been loaded into the retort and the ink subjected to the specified combination or time, temperature and steam of the correct quality, the purple stripe change to green. Retort Checks do not act as a replacement for any other process control procedures and act as a visual indication of exposure to steam in a specific food canning process.

Correctly used, Retort Check food cannery batch process indicators are a great way to demonstrate a commitment to process control when facilities are audited. These food process indicator tags are specified by the biggest food retailers in the world as their preferred batch process indicator for canned food.

The Retort Check range is also very accurate. Unlike regular autoclave tape with its much simpler color change ink that often reacts only to heat, the SteriTec retort indicators only change color when the exposed to the correct steam at the right temperature for the correct duration and come in six different grades to match your process. Check out the Selection Chart pdf in the resources tab to find out which canning indicator best suits your process.

They are easily retained in food processing plant records to provide evidence and traceability for quality assurance and quality control. As seen in the graphics above, operators can record information about each process on the card itself and file this with other process documentation or charts after the batch canning process is complete. The Retort Check indicators are manufactured in accordance with FDA QSR and ISO 9002 in an FDA Quality Systems Registered facility. Each indicator carries a lot number for traceability and each lot is tested by SteriTec Products Inc for compliance before release.

For the most effective means of displaying the indicators, attach our Aluminium Holders to your basket or tray.
